YOUNG, DAVID B., AND HOWARD I-L ROSTORFER. BloodJEow and filtration rate responses to alterations in mal arterial osmolarity. Am. J. Physiol. 225(5) : 1003-1008. 19 73 .-By infusing small volumes of hypertonic or hypotonic solutions of NaCl, dextrose, or urea into the renal arteries of anesthetized dogs, renal arterial plasma osmolarity was changed over a range of + 56 to 34 mOsm/liter. Within seconds of the start of infusions, renal blood Aow (RBF), measured by an electromagnetic flowmeter, and glomerular fiitration rate (GFR), measured by the creatinine extraction-ratio technique, varied directly with renal arterial osmolarity. The RBF responses were consistent; the correlation coefficients of the regressions between percent changes of RBF and percent changes of osmolarity were 0.9 for all three compounds, while the slopes of the regressions were 0.35, 0.30, and 0.22 for NaCI, dextrose, and urea, respectively, Filtration rate responses were variable. GFR and RBF both responded to changes in renal arterial plasma osmolarity of less than 5 mOsm/liter. The results suggest that plasma osmolarity may be a factor affecting renal hemodynamics under physioIogic conditions.

[Cardiovascular and renal effects of intra-arterial injection of ionic radiological contrast in dogs under fluid restriction.].
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES This study aimed at evaluating acute radiological contrast effects in fluid restriction situations, observing renal and cardiovascular effects after intra-arterial injection of high osmolarity radiological contrast. METHODS Participated in this study 16 dogs anesthetized with sodium thiopental (15 mg.kg-1) and fentanyl (0.03 mL.kg-1), followed by continuous infusion ...
متن کاملAutoregulation of renal blood flow: alteration by methoxyflurane.
THE FLOW OF BLOOD to the kidneys is apparently controlled by these organs themselves. Within certain limits this flow is independent of fluctuations in arterial pressure. 1 Thus renal blood flow tends to remain relatively constant in spite of the many fluctuations in pressure to which the systemic circulation is subject. That this regulation is indeed an autonomous function of the organ is show...
متن کاملPressure natriuresis and autoregulation of inner medullary blood flow in canine kidney.
We have evaluated the responses to changes in arterial pressure on regional blood flows in the renal medulla and sodium excretion simultaneously in denervated kidneys of six anesthetized sodium-replete dogs. Renal regional blood flow responses were determined using laser-Doppler needle flow probes and whole-kidney blood flow was assessed using an electromagnetic flow probe. The responses to ste...
متن کاملComparing the Effect of Simple Filtration Hemodialysis and Ultrafiltration Hemodialysis on Arterial Oxygen Saturation and Blood Pressure in Chronic Dialysis
Background and purpose: Hypoxemia and hypotension are important complications of hemodialysis in patients with chronic renal failure that are linked to several factors, including the type of filters used. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of simple filtration hemodialysis and ultrafiltration hemodialysis on blood pressure and blood arterial oxygen level. Materials and methods: In...
متن کاملDirect Renal Vasodilatation Produced by Dopamine in the Dog.
• We have recently demonstrated that intravenous administration of the naturally occurring catecholamine, dopamine, increases effective renal plasma flow, glomerular filtration rate, and sodium excretion in normal human subjects. Since renal plasma flow increased in the absence of an alteration in mean arterial pressure, it was concluded that renal vascular resistance was decreased by dopamine....
